The diverse group of manufacturers, distributors, retailers, publishing companies, auto restorers, street-rod builders, restylers, car clubs, and race teams that joined forces to form the Specialty Equipment Market Association, commonly known as SEMA, did so out of a shared love for automobiles. These individuals turned their hobby into careers, channeling their passion for cars and trucks into livelihoods.

Founded 60 years ago on the premise of “small manufacturers supplying performance gear for early hot rods,” SEMA has since expanded into an organization that supports a multi-billion dollar industry responsible for driving economic growth across America.

The meaning of SEMA has changed over the years, as the organization has grown to become an automotive trade association representing companies at every stage of the distribution chain – from manufacturers, distributors, retailers and more – with a mission to help members thrive by offering education, advocacy, networking, and promoting industry excellence. SEMA enhances the specialty equipment industry by helping industry professionals connect, form relationships, and flourish within the automotive industry.

In fact, SEMA’s recent economic report highlights its members’ incredible impact. According to this report, SEMA’s members support 1.3 million jobs, contribute $104 billion in wages, and generate $336 billion in revenue. The automotive industry is a national economic engine, and SEMA is driving growth by contributing directly to the specialty equipment market.

“We’re extremely proud that our industry represents such a key part of America’s economy, affecting any motorist who has upgraded their vehicle for a host of needs,” said Mike Spagnola, SEMA’s President and CEO. “SEMA’s 7,000-plus members – which are primarily small businesses and the more than one million workers in the specialty aftermarket – are extraordinary contributors to making the U.S. and local economies stronger across the country.”

Speaking of local economies, SEMA’s presence has been felt in Pennsylvania since day one. In fact, the economic report found that in Pennsylvania alone, SEMA members have produced $9.26 billion in economic output and over 40,000 jobs.

“It’s an industry that, in one way or another, everyone has a stake in,” Spagnola said. “It provides people with good-paying jobs, and our local, state and federal coffers with taxes that grow our country’s economy. SEMA’s ecosystem is a powerhouse economic engine driving positive change, innovation, and opportunity to America’s big cities and small towns, working families and small businesses. The specialty equipment aftermarket has proven to be a vibrant industry that delivers economic support to all 50 states.”

SEMA’s focus on the “little guy” is paying dividends, with positive outcomes for communities and businesses across the Commonwealth. The organization continues its growth-focused approach, with a goal of creating jobs and having a beneficial impact on society.

SEMA’s main event each year is its annual trade show in Las Vegas, where the organization encourages industry professionals to showcase their new products. The November networking event brings together automotive experts and enthusiasts, with more than 2,000 exhibitors showcasing the newest automotive performance products from new and iconic brands each year.

SEMA is driving industry growth and brand recognition throughout Pennsylvania. The organization is encouraging its members to visit with local lawmakers and get the word out about their strong influence on jobs and economic output throughout the Commonwealth. Telling its members’ story is part of SEMA’s overall strategy for the automotive industry’s continued success, as these businesses continue to be difference makers in the specialty equipment industry and beyond.
