Maryland has a rich and diverse history that spans centuries. From its early Native American settlements to its role in the American Civil War, the state has played a significant part in shaping the nation. Explore the timeline of Maryland’s history to gain a deeper understanding of its fascinating past.

Founding of St. Mary’s City (1634)

In 1634, St. Mary’s City was founded as the first permanent English settlement in Maryland. It was established by a group of English Catholics led by Lord Baltimore, who sought a refuge from religious persecution in England.

The settlement quickly grew and became the capital of the Maryland colony. St. Mary’s City played a crucial role in the early development of Maryland and served as a center for trade, government, and religious freedom.

Today, visitors can explore the historic site and learn about the early days of Maryland’s history.

Maryland becomes a royal colony (1692)

In 1692, Maryland became a royal colony under the direct control of the British crown. This change in status occurred as a result of political tensions between the Catholic majority in Maryland and the Protestant government in England. The Protestant uprising, known as the Glorious Revolution, led to the overthrow of Catholic King James II and the installation of Protestant rulers William and Mary.

As a royal colony, Maryland’s government was restructured, and the Church of England became the official religion. This period marked a significant shift in Maryland’s political and religious landscape, shaping its future as a British colony.

Maryland’s role in the American Revolution (1776-1783)

During the American Revolution, Maryland played a crucial role in the fight for independence from British rule. The state’s strategic location along the Chesapeake Bay made it a key battleground and a vital supply route for the Continental Army. Maryland’s soldiers fought bravely in several major battles, including the Battle of Long Island, the Battle of Princeton, and the Battle of Monmouth.

Notable Marylanders, such as Charles Carroll and Samuel Chase, also played important roles in the Continental Congress and the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. Maryland’s contributions to the American Revolution helped secure victory for the colonies and laid the foundation for the formation of the United States of America.

The War of 1812 and the Battle of Baltimore (1812-1814)

The War of 1812 was a significant event in Maryland’s history, as the state once again found itself on the front lines of a major conflict. British forces targeted Baltimore, aiming to capture the city and deal a blow to American morale.

The Battle of Baltimore, which took place in September 1814, was a pivotal moment in the war. Marylanders, including African American soldiers and militia units, played a crucial role in defending the city against the British onslaught.

The most famous moment of the battle came when Francis Scott Key, a Maryland lawyer and amateur poet, witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry and was inspired to write what would become the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The successful defense of Baltimore boosted American spirits and marked a turning point in the war. Maryland’s contributions during the War of 1812 are still celebrated today, and the state’s role in shaping American history cannot be understated.

Maryland’s involvement in the Civil War (1861-1865)

Maryland’s involvement in the Civil War was complex and divided. As a border state, it was caught between the Union and the Confederacy, with residents holding differing loyalties. While Maryland officially remained in the Union, there were many Confederate sympathizers within the state.

The city of Baltimore, in particular, was a hotbed of tension and violence. In April 1861, when Union troops were passing through Baltimore to reach Washington, D.C., a mob attacked them, resulting in the first bloodshed of the war. Maryland also saw several significant battles, including the Battle of Antietam in 1862, which was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history.

Despite the divided loyalties, Maryland ultimately played a crucial role in the Union’s victory, providing troops, resources and support. The state’s involvement in the Civil War left a lasting impact on its history and shaped its identity.
