Josh Terc and Dallis Vargas looking into each other's eyes with the city in the background

For 363 days each year, Joshua Terc and Dallis Vargas love each other more than anything in the world.

They are partners and friends who enjoy a nice night out at their favorite spot around the corner from their Brooklyn apartment. They can’t wait to spend time together, even if they’re just mixing a couple cocktails in their own kitchen.

That goes for all but two Sundays, when her Dallas Cowboys play his New York Giants, and all that’s left are two diehard fans of two proud NFL franchises. Both teams have deep ties to their families, so when the whistle blows, Joshua and Dallis hit “pause” on the whole “can’t live without you” thing.

“We’re always ribbing each other about the Giants or the Cowboys,” Joshua said. “It’s a big part of who we are and it’s fun to joke around about it. We act like there’s only two Sundays a year where we don’t love each other, and that’s when the Giants play the Cowboys.”

The Giants-Cowboys rivalry is all in good fun, of course, for a couple on their way toward a May wedding. The reality is, Joshua speaks with absolute love for Dallis, whose blend of kindness and toughness has inspired him from the moment they first met at the University of Maryland.

They were friends who didn’t realize at the time that they might end up together, but they kept in touch and got their official start when Dallis transferred to St. John’s University. Joshua ultimately proposed to her in Bryant Park, Dallis’ favorite spot in the city, and she said ‘Yes’ …. Eventually.

“She thought I was joking and wasn’t sure what I was doing at first,” Joshua said. “She asked if I was serious. I said yes, and she eventually said yes, like 10 seconds later.”

Nobody in Joshua’s life would dispute that he has overachieved in his relationship. Dallis is a hard-working, successful lawyer who also loves football and is “easy to be around,” Josh says. She works hard, is decidedly low maintenance, and enjoys the simple things in life as much as Joshua does.

Dallis hasn’t always had it easy, but she learned at an early age to work hard and fight for everything she gets. She works as an attorney but has a heart for giving and volunteers for a nonprofit called Empower Her, which supports young women who lost their mothers to breast cancer.

Dallis lost her mom, and it changed the trajectory of her life. But between her giving, her work ethic and her general outlook on life, Dallis’ mother is surely looking down from above and smiling at the person her daughter has become.

“She’s my best friend,” Joshua said. “She’s funny. She’s smart. She’s really easy to be around. She’s the strongest person I know. She’s doing all she can to help young women going through something similar.”

With the image of her mother driving her forward, no challenge is going to slow Dallis and Joshua down. Their dream wedding still hangs in the balance of a pandemic, but they’re doing everything they can to make it special.

They have grand plans for a 300-person event, but intend to get married May 21 no matter what happens. For so many reasons, Joshua can’t wait to start the rest of his life with Dallis, who supports him relentlessly and brings out the best in him.

“I’m just so thankful that I get to marry my best friend,” he said. “I wouldn’t be here without her.”
