5 Tips for starting a small business

sign that says, "we can't thank you enough for supporting our small business"

We know there are many people out there who are considering starting a small business, as well as many people out there who are just looking to take their small business to the next level. That said, we have broken down five tips we think could be very useful in creating a successful small business.

  1. Be ready to adapt – Times are constantly changing. Whether it be a new social media to learn the ropes of or a new way of accepting money, you have to be ready and willing to make the necessary changes so you do not fall behind the curve.
    • “Nobody likes to change. There will always be resistance to change, and there always will be change. And the quicker you get to that, the easier it is. It’s not such a difficult thing. If you entrench yourself and go, ‘By God, I will not change, I will not have this.’ Then, you’re a dead man. We’re great at adaptability. It’s our strongest suit.” – Nick Nolte
  1. Listen to your customers – You may think you know your customers best, but that is only true if you actually listen to them. While you do not want to do anything that would harm the integrity of your business or make you less profitable, you do want to make sure when you make changes while keeping their thoughts in mind.5 small business tips
    • “Imagine your customer is your best friend—listen to their concerns, be a shoulder to lean on and then shift the focus from what went wrong to how you can help make it right.” – Rachel Hogue
  1. Stay true to your word – Nothing is worse when people say one thing and do another. The same is true with business. Make sure you have everything written out and that you stick to it.
    • “What builds character? It’s a commitment to integrity, hard work, honor and keeping your word. All of that comes straight out of the Sigma Nu Creed. The guy who wrote that meant it. The whole idea is to think about those words and make them a part of who you are.” – Bill Courtney
  1. Do what’s best for your business – While you should always be willing to listen to your customers, you should make sure you are prioritizing the needs of your business. If you do not, then your business might not sustain profitability.
    • “Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, Instagram, all these companies are businesses first, but, as a close second, they’re demographers of unprecedented reach, thoroughness, and importance. Practically as an accident, digital data can now show us how we fight, how we love, how we age, who we are, and how we’re changing. All we have to do is look.” – Christian Rudder
  1. Be willing to try new things – Sometimes it is easy to get stuck in our ways. However, that is not good when it comes to running a business. If you are not willing to try new things out, you might get left in the dust.
    • “You will have to experiment and try things out for yourself and you will not be sure of what you are doing. That’s alright, you are feeling your way into the thing.” – Emily Carr

There are so many other things that go into creating a successful small business as well, but these are some of the most important things that some people tend to overlook way too much. They might all sound pretty straightforward and self-explanatory, but you would be surprised how difficult these things can be to follow when you actually run a small business.
